Many club players take a big swing at volleys and lose control. At the net, there is less time and the ball is already coming with pace.

    • A compact “punch” with little backswing gives more control
    • The continental grip allows both forehand and backhand volleys without changing grip
    • Moving forward into the volley adds pace without a big swing
    • Keeping the racquet head up and in front makes reactions quicker

A drill I like: stand close to the net with a partner feeding from the service line, and volley with only a small step and no swing. Then gradually move back. Players often discover that they need much less swing than they thought.
