Many amateur teams train and play on artificial turf, and players often worry that it is harder on the body.

    • Modern third-generation turf has been studied widely; overall injury rates in many studies are broadly similar to natural grass
    • Some research suggests possible differences in specific injuries, such as ankle sprains, but findings are not fully consistent
    • Players often report more soreness and fatigue after switching surfaces, especially when the change is sudden
    • Shoe choice matters: long studs designed for soft grass may grip too much on turf

Which surface do you train on, and do you notice a difference in how your legs feel?

A practical point: when the team switches surfaces, for example from a winter on turf to grass in spring, a gradual transition with shorter sessions on the new surface for a week or two can reduce soreness. The body adapts to the surface you train on most.
