Double threshold sessions, two threshold workouts on the same day, have become popular through some elite distance runners. The idea is to accumulate more time at threshold while keeping each session controlled.

    • Each session is done at controlled intensity, often guided by lactate measurements in elite settings
    • Elite athletes using this approach usually have very high training volumes, years of background and close monitoring
    • For amateurs with limited time and recovery, two quality sessions per week usually give a good return already
    • If attempted, keep both sessions moderate and reduce other intensity in the week

Related: lactate threshold training and tempo runs.

Have you tried double threshold days, and how did they fit your week?

If an experienced amateur wants to try it: morning 4×6 minutes at threshold pace with 1 minute rest, evening 8×3 minutes at the same pace with 1 minute rest. Keep the rest of the week easy, and try it only every week or two at first.
