Watches give us dozens of numbers. One of the simplest methods still works very well: session RPE.

    How it works:

    • After a session, rate how hard it was from 0 to 10
    • Multiply by the duration in minutes: 60 minutes x 6 = 360 units
    • Track the weekly total and how it changes from week to week

Big, sudden jumps are associated with injury and overreaching. More: what is RPE and how do coaches use it?

How do you track your load?

Give the rating about 30 minutes after the session, not right away. That way the last few minutes don’t dominate and the number reflects the whole session.

Add simple 1-5 scores for sleep, soreness and general mood, and you have a powerful monitoring tool. If those scores get worse for several days while load stays the same, that’s usually a signal to back off.
