Smart trainers make structured cycling easy, but indoor riding has its own challenges: heat, boredom and saddle discomfort.

    • Without airflow, body temperature and heart rate rise faster than outdoors; a strong fan makes a big difference
    • Indoor sessions are well suited to precise intervals because there are no traffic lights, descents or wind
    • Many riders find 60-90 minutes indoors feels as demanding as a much longer outdoor ride, partly because there is no coasting
    • Drink more than you think; sweat rates indoors can be high

What is your best trick for making indoor sessions bearable?

A structured 60-minute indoor session: 10 minutes warm-up, 4×8 minutes at threshold with 4 minutes easy, 10 minutes cool-down. It fits a busy day and gives the same stimulus as a longer outdoor threshold ride.
