Running form gets a lot of attention online, especially foot strike. The evidence suggests that most runners self-select a reasonably efficient style, and that big changes need a clear reason.

    • Heel striking is common among recreational and many elite distance runners; it is not automatically harmful
    • Switching to a forefoot strike shifts load from the knee towards the calf and Achilles, which can be a problem if done abruptly
    • Overstriding, landing with the foot far ahead of the body, is more often the issue than foot strike itself
    • Form changes are best made gradually and usually only when there is a recurring injury or a clear inefficiency

Simple cues that often help without overthinking: “run tall”, “quick light steps”, “land under your hips”. These tend to reduce overstriding indirectly. A short video from the side at your usual pace shows more than any amount of reading.
