A wetsuit improves buoyancy and keeps you warm, which for most age-group triathletes means a faster, more comfortable swim. Fit matters more than brand or price.
A good fit is snug everywhere without restricting breathing; water should not pool in the lower back
Shoulder flexibility is the most common complaint; thinner panels around the shoulders help many swimmers
Buoyancy benefits are often largest for swimmers whose legs sink, which includes many newer swimmers
Race rules set maximum thickness and water temperature limits for wetsuit use; check your federation’s rules
Put the suit on slowly, working the material up the legs and arms so there is no tension at the shoulders. Pulling the suit high into the crotch and armpits makes a large difference to shoulder freedom. Practise this before race day.
