The Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test level 1 is one of the most common field tests in football. It’s 20 m shuttles with 10 seconds of active rest between them, getting faster each level.
What it measures:
Your ability to repeat high-intensity running and recover between efforts
It reflects match demands better than a maximal oxygen uptake test
Top-level male professionals mostly score above 2,000 m; amateur scores are lower
When repeating the test, keep things the same: surface, shoes, similar weather and similar fatigue beforehand. Results can differ even between grass and artificial turf.
