Measures: Aerobic threshold intensity (VT1 estimate)
Table of Contents
Difficulty: Easy | Category: Aerobic
Protocol
The Talk Test is a simple and non-invasive method that uses conversational comfort during exercise to estimate the aerobic threshold (VT1 – First Ventilatory Threshold). Introduced into scientific literature by Foster et al., this test enables threshold intensity determination without requiring expensive equipment. Preparation: The participant memorizes or has access to a standard text (typically a 30-word passage such as the ‘Pledge of Allegiance’ or a Turkish equivalent). A treadmill or cycle ergometer is used. A heart rate monitor is fitted. Protocol: The test is applied with progressive intensity increases. Each stage lasts 2–3 minutes. At the end of each stage, the participant reads the standard text aloud or speaks a 10–20 word sentence. The test administrator scores using three categories: ‘Can speak comfortably’ (CAN), ‘Can speak with difficulty’ (UNSURE), ‘Cannot speak’ (CANNOT). The threshold point at which comfortable speech is lost is defined as the aerobic threshold. Data Recording: HR, intensity (km/h or W), and speech score are recorded at each stage. The HR at the first point where ‘UNSURE’ or ‘CANNOT’ is reported is recorded as the aerobic threshold HR. Calculation: Aerobic threshold intensity is directly determined from the speech response transition point. This intensity shows a strong correlation of 87–89% with VT1. Post-Test: Results are used to determine training intensity zones. Long-duration exercise prescriptions can be planned below the aerobic threshold.Formula
Aerobic threshold = the intensity at which comfortable speech is lost (as HR and speed/power)
Equipment Required
treadmill or cycle ergometer, heart rate monitor, stopwatch
Normative Values (Age: all ages)
| Classification | Male | Female |
|---|---|---|
| Excellent | VT1 >70% HRmax | VT1 >70% HRmax |
| Good | VT1 60-70% HRmax | VT1 60-70% HRmax |
| Average | VT1 50-60% HRmax | VT1 50-60% HRmax |
| Below Average | VT1 40-50% HRmax | VT1 40-50% HRmax |
| Poor | VT1 <40% HRmax | VT1 <40% HRmax |
Practical Applications
The Talk Test is ideal for clinical exercise prescription, general population fitness assessment, and physiotherapy rehabilitation programs. Its lack of laboratory infrastructure requirements makes it easily applicable in the field.Limitations
Speech assessment is subjective and dependent on the test administrator’s interpretation. Identifying the threshold can be difficult with rapid intensity transitions. May not be valid in individuals with severe pulmonary disease.Related Tests: Lactate Threshold Test, Conconi Test, Ramp Test
