Protocol

The Conconi Test, developed by Francesco Conconi et al. in 1982, is a field test used to determine the anaerobic threshold. The test monitors the heart rate (HR) response to increasing running speed and identifies the deflection point in the HR-speed relationship as the anaerobic threshold.

Preparation: The participant performs the test on a 400m track. A heart rate monitor is fitted and verified for accurate recording. A 5–10 minute warm-up run is performed.

Protocol: The participant begins running at a low speed (8–10 km/h). Speed is increased by 0.5 km/h after every 200-meter segment. HR and speed are recorded at each segment. The test continues until the participant approaches maximal effort (RPE >17) or a clear HR deflection is observed.

Data Analysis: HR is plotted against running speed. A linear relationship is expected; above a certain speed, the HR increase slows (deflection) or plateaus. This deflection point is taken as the anaerobic threshold speed. Graphical analysis can be performed manually or with software.

Calculation: The deflection speed (Vd) is recorded. Vd is used to determine training intensity zones. The HR at this threshold (HRd) serves as a reference for training.

Post-Test: A 5-minute cool-down run is performed. Data are analyzed on a computer. Results are interpreted together with the athlete to update training intensity zones.

Formula

Defleksiyon noktası grafiksel analiz ile belirlenir; Vd (km/sa) ve KAHd (atım/dak) kaydedilir

Equipment Required

400m pist, kalp atım hızı monitörü, kronometre veya GPS saati

Normative Values (Age: 18-40 (dayanıklılık sporcuları))

Classification Male Female
Excellent Vd >18 km/sa Vd >15 km/sa
Good Vd 15-18 km/sa Vd 12-15 km/sa
Average Vd 12-15 km/sa Vd 9-12 km/sa
Below Average Vd 9-12 km/sa Vd 7-9 km/sa
Poor Vd <9 km/sa Vd <7 km/sa

Practical Applications

The Conconi test is a practical field tool for determining training intensity zones and estimating the lactate threshold. It is suitable for triathletes, cyclists, and middle-to-long-distance runners.

Limitations

HR deflection may not be clearly observable in every individual, reducing test reliability. Inadequate warm-up, fatigue, and environmental conditions affect results. Accuracy may be lower compared to laboratory tests.
