Championship MMA is a five-round, five-minute-on / one-minute-off intermittent activity in which the work bouts are dominated by short, supra-threshold bursts — strikes, takedown entries and defences, scrambles, ground exchanges — layered over a continuous postural and breathing demand under the threat of damage. Joyner and Coyle’s framework for endurance performance — the interaction of maximal oxygen uptake, lactate threshold, and the economy with which oxygen is used — applies cleanly to that work envelope: a fighter with a higher ceiling and a higher fractional utilisation produces the same external work at a lower physiological cost, and the cost saved is what feeds the next exchange [1].

Wisløff and colleagues’ work on the relationship between maximal squat strength and explosive lower-body output is the upstream variable on the power side: maximal strength scales with sprint and vertical-jump capacity, and the same neuromuscular substrate underwrites striking velocity and takedown-defence anchoring [2]. For a women’s MMA champion competing across two divisions, the maximal-strength base is the substrate that lets the bantamweight power signature survive the small additional mass required to make 145 lb without a damaging cut.

The takeaway for the dual-division problem is that the power signature and the aerobic substrate are not in opposition — they are coupled, and the coupling is what either survives the cumulative stress of carrying two titles or quietly degrades into a late-round fade.

The legacy — undefeated across her championship reign in stretches that included finishing two former title-holders within a calendar year — is the visible expression of a power-and-cardio coupling that few female fighters in the modern era have produced.

The under-discussed dimension is the female-athlete physiology overlay. The same Joyner and Coyle ceilings apply, but the absolute mass available to express maximal strength is lower; the upstream Wisløff substrate is therefore expressed differently, and the camp programming has to respect a smaller margin for accumulated soft-tissue cost without sacrificing the high-intensity layer [1, 2, 4]. Stølen’s intermittent-sport framework is the bridge: maintaining repeated-effort capacity at lower mass requires a more refined HIIT prescription, not a copy-paste of the men’s-division template [5].

Practical assessment for amateurs: track three indicators across a training block — a maximal-strength reference (a properly supervised back-squat or trap-bar deadlift one-rep max progression), a repeated-effort benchmark (a six-times-thirty-second high-intensity bag or grappling round set with the late-round output as the variable of interest), and a sub-maximal aerobic reference (heart-rate recovery one minute after a standard interval). Drift in any one of the three is the early signal that the balance is moving the wrong way.

The diagnostic question for the developing fighter: am I producing my round-one power output in round four, or has the curve already started to bend by round two — and does my answer change when I move up a weight class?
