VO₂max — the maximum rate at which the body can consume oxygen during exercise — is one of the most studied fitness markers in sport science. It is the gold-standard measure of aerobic capacity. For endurance athletes, it correlates strongly with performance. For tennis players, the relationship is more nuanced.

Tennis is not an endurance sport in the way running or cycling is. The points are alactic, the rallies are short, and aerobic capacity matters for recovery rather than for the work itself. So how much VO₂max does a tennis player actually need? More than nothing — that’s clear. But how much is enough, and how much is excessive?
This article is what the data says about VO₂max for tennis, where the meaningful thresholds lie, and how players should think about training aerobic capacity within an overall tennis development plan.
What VO₂max Actually Measures
VO₂max is the maximum volume of oxygen, in milliliters per minute per kilogram of body weight, that the body can consume during maximal exercise. It is measured under standardized conditions (incremental exercise test, typically on a treadmill or cycle ergometer until exhaustion). The number reflects:
- Lung capacity to take in oxygen
- Cardiovascular capacity to transport it
- Muscular capacity to extract and use it
A higher number means a higher peak aerobic energy production rate. Endurance athletes like marathoners and cyclists routinely have VO₂max values above 70-80 ml/kg/min. Sedentary adults are typically in the 35-45 ml/kg/min range.
For tennis players specifically:
- Elite male professionals: 55-65 ml/kg/min typical range.
- Elite female professionals: 45-55 ml/kg/min typical range.
- Competitive juniors: 45-60 ml/kg/min.
- Recreational adult players: typically 35-50 ml/kg/min.
These ranges are below endurance athletes but above sedentary populations. Tennis players are aerobically fit, but not extremely so by the standards of endurance sports.
The Floor: Below Which Performance Suffers
Research suggests there is a threshold below which tennis-specific performance is meaningfully impaired. For men, this appears to be roughly 50 ml/kg/min; for women, roughly 42 ml/kg/min. Below these values, players show:
- Faster cardiac drift across long matches
- Worse decision-making in the third set
- Slower recovery between long rallies
- Higher injury rates in extended training
Above the threshold, these effects flatten. A player at 60 ml/kg/min doesn’t outperform one at 52 ml/kg/min in tennis terms — the relationship has diminishing returns.
This is critical coaching information. The aerobic training program for a player with VO₂max at 40 is fundamentally different from one for a player at 55. The first player has a major fitness limitation that constrains everything else. The second has already paid the aerobic cost and can spend training time on other capacities.
The Ceiling: Above Which More Doesn’t Help
The data also suggests an upper bound for tennis: above roughly 65 ml/kg/min for men or 55 ml/kg/min for women, additional VO₂max gains don’t transfer to better tennis. The athlete has more aerobic capacity than the sport demands. Further investment in aerobic training has diminishing returns and may interfere with the alactic and strength qualities that tennis actually requires.
This is why elite tennis players, even at the very top, don’t have VO₂max numbers like marathoners. They don’t need them. The structural sport demands a moderate-to-high aerobic floor, not a maximal aerobic ceiling. Training above the ceiling costs energy that could be invested in tennis-specific qualities.
The practical implication: a player who has reached the upper end of the appropriate range should stop trying to push VO₂max higher. The next gains come from elsewhere.
How to Estimate Your VO₂max Without a Lab Test
Three approximations:
Method 1: The Cooper Test. Run as far as you can in 12 minutes. The distance covered, in meters, can be converted to estimated VO₂max using: VO₂max ≈ (Distance in meters – 504.9) / 44.73
For example, 2400 meters in 12 minutes gives approximately 42 ml/kg/min. The test is rough but informative.
Method 2: Resting heart rate inverse. Generally, lower resting heart rate correlates with higher aerobic fitness. A resting HR of 50-55 suggests excellent fitness; 60-70 is average; 75+ suggests poor fitness. The relationship is approximate but useful.
Method 3: Recovery heart rate. After a hard interval, measure how many beats your HR drops in 60 seconds. A drop of 40+ beats suggests good aerobic fitness; 20-30 suggests average; 10-20 suggests poor.
For most amateur players, these approximations are sufficient. A lab test is more accurate but unnecessary for guiding training.
Training to Raise VO₂max
If a player’s VO₂max is below the threshold for their sex, raising it is a priority. The most effective training methods are:
Method 1: Long aerobic intervals. 4-6 minutes at 90-95% of max heart rate, with 3-5 minutes of recovery, repeated 4-6 times. This is the most direct VO₂max stimulus. Done 2-3 times per week.
Method 2: Tempo work. 20-30 minutes at 80-85% of max heart rate. Less intense but more sustainable. Builds the aerobic base on which the high-intensity work operates.
Method 3: Tennis-specific intervals. Drill sequences designed to push HR into the VO₂max zone (90%+ of max), repeated with measured recovery. Less precise than dedicated cardio, but more transferable to tennis.
Within 8-12 weeks of structured work, most players can raise their VO₂max by 5-15%. The trainability is real, though limited (genetic baseline matters too).
Why Tennis-Specific Conditioning Often Beats Generic Cardio
For players already in the appropriate VO₂max range, generic cardio (long runs, long bike rides) becomes less useful. The training time would be better invested in:
- Tennis-specific intervals that train the same aerobic capacity in the patterns the sport actually uses.
- Alactic training for the energy system that produces points.
- Strength training for the physical capacity that supports both technique and movement.
- Court time for actual tennis development.
A player who has passed the VO₂max threshold doesn’t need more aerobic capacity. They need more tennis-specific capacity. The difference is what most amateur programs get wrong — they keep doing long runs after the aerobic floor has been crossed.
Maintaining VO₂max Through a Season
VO₂max is somewhat fragile — without regular training stimulus, it declines. A player who builds VO₂max to a good level and then stops training aerobic capacity will lose 10-20% within several months.
The maintenance protocol is light:
- One tempo session per week of 25-30 minutes at moderate intensity
- Tennis-specific interval work embedded in regular practice
- Occasional high-intensity sessions every 2-3 weeks to refresh the high-end stimulus
This maintenance is much less time than initial development. It allows the player to retain their aerobic floor while spending the bulk of training time on other priorities.
Junior VO₂max Considerations
For juniors, VO₂max development should be playful and varied:
- Under 12: No structured VO₂max training. Multi-sport play and games provide adequate aerobic stimulus.
- 12-14: Some structured work, but mainly through tennis itself. Long matches and high-density practices build aerobic capacity organically.
- 14-16: Structured aerobic intervals can be added. Volume kept moderate.
- 16+: Full training, with the same threshold logic applied.
The principle of avoiding excess aerobic work applies to juniors too. A junior with strong VO₂max is well-prepared for tennis demands. A junior whose training time is dominated by aerobic work may underdevelop other capacities.
The Heat Component
A note on heat: VO₂max is meaningful for tennis particularly in hot, prolonged matches. Heat stresses the cardiovascular system; players with higher aerobic capacity tolerate heat better. For players competing in hot climates or summer tournaments, the aerobic floor is more critical than for cooler-condition players.
Heat acclimatization training (deliberate exercise in hot conditions, 10-14 sessions over 2 weeks) is a separate but related topic. It builds tolerance independent of pure VO₂max gains.
One Thing to Do on Court Tomorrow
For your next aerobic session, do an honest assessment: run for 12 minutes as fast as you can sustainably maintain, measure the distance, and estimate your VO₂max. Compare to the threshold for your sex.
If you’re below threshold, your aerobic training priority is clear — raise it. If you’re at or above threshold, your training time should be shifting toward tennis-specific work and other capacities. The diagnosis is simple but most amateur players don’t have it.
VO₂max is one of the few sport-science variables you can estimate cheaply and use to guide training. Use it. Stop training the wrong thing, and your tennis will improve faster.
