Failing at something you’ve done a hundred times in training, just when it matters. One of the most frustrating experiences in sport.

    Two main explanations in research:

    • Distraction: worrying thoughts pull attention away from the task
    • Over-control: consciously steering a well-learned movement step by step breaks it down

    What helps:

    • A consistent pre-performance routine
    • Focusing on the target and the process rather than the outcome
    • Adding pressure in training: scores, small forfeits, an audience

More: the science of choking under pressure.

What happens to you in big moments?

An easy way to add pressure in training: a small forfeit for every missed penalty or serve, or a little competition between friends. Athletes used to pressure are less surprised by it in matches.
