Protocol

The Deceleration Test measures an athlete’s capacity to transition from maximum speed to a controlled stop. Deceleration is directly related to eccentric force capacity and injury risk; it is a particularly determinant factor in ACL injuries.

Preparation: A flat 30–40m surface is prepared. The participant will sprint 20m at maximum speed and then come to a controlled stop in the designated stopping zone (last 10–15m). Photoelectric cells are placed at 20m and 30m. The participant warms up for 10–15 minutes.

Test Procedure: The participant performs a 20m maximal sprint from the starting point. After the photoelectric cell line, they attempt to stop within 5–7m. Stopping distance (m) and stopping time (sec) are measured. Some protocols require stopping within 3 steps.

Evaluation Parameters: Stopping distance (m): shorter distance = higher capacity. Asymmetry: comparison of left and right leg deceleration. Stopping quality: body posture and knee valgus assessment.

Calculation: Deceleration rate (m/s²) = Ventry² / (2 × stopping_distance_m). Deceleration index = max_v / stopping_distance.

Post-Test: Asymmetry analysis is performed. High asymmetry (>15%) or insufficient deceleration capacity requires rehabilitation or preventive training.

Formula

Yavaşlama (m/s²) = V² / (2 × duruş_mesafesi); yavaşlama indeksi = V / duruş_mesafesi

Equipment Required

30-40m düz zemin, fotosel sistemi (iki eşikli), koni

Practical Applications

The deceleration test provides critical data for ACL prevention programs, post-injury rehabilitation, and eccentric strength training program evaluation.

Limitations

Objectively measuring stopping distance may require video analysis. Ground type and footwear significantly affect deceleration capacity.
