Protocol

The Watt-max Test is a graded ergometer test that determines maximal aerobic power (the watt value corresponding to VO₂max) on a bicycle. It has a similar structure to the Ramp Test, but some versions use 5-minute constant stages rather than continuous ramping. Preparation: The cycle ergometer is calibrated. The participant warms up for 10 minutes. Starting load is determined by fitness level: 50 W for sedentary individuals, 100–150 W for athletes. Protocol (Staged Version): Power is increased by 50 W every 5 minutes. Cadence is maintained near 70–90 RPM. The test continues until the participant cannot sustain the required power for 60 seconds. Steady-state heart rate is recorded at each stage. Alternative Protocol (Ramp): A ramp version with 25 W increases per minute is also available. In both versions, the final power value is defined as ‘Watt-max’ (Wmax). Calculation: VO₂max (L/min) = Wmax × 0.01141 + 0.435 (male); Wmax × 0.00912 + 0.259 (female). Wmax/kg (W/kg) is also used as an aerobic power indicator. Post-Test: A 5–10 minute cool-down at low power is performed. The Wmax value is recorded for training zones and comparative analysis.

Formula

VO₂max (L/min) male = Wmax × 0.01141 + 0.435; female = Wmax × 0.00912 + 0.259

Equipment Required

bisiklet ergometre, güç ölçer, kalp atım hızı monitörü, kronometre

Normative Values (Age: 20-40 (bisikletçiler))

ClassificationMaleFemale
Excellent>5.5 W/kg Wmax>4.5 W/kg Wmax
Good4.5-5.5 W/kg3.5-4.5 W/kg
Average3.5-4.5 W/kg2.5-3.5 W/kg
Below Average2.5-3.5 W/kg1.8-2.5 W/kg
Poor<2.5 W/kg<1.8 W/kg

Practical Applications

The Watt-max test is used in cycling and triathlon training to determine the aerobic power ceiling, plan training, and monitor long-term development.

Limitations

Ergometer calibration is critical; different devices may produce different results. Staged and ramp versions may produce different Wmax values.
