Protocol
The Glycolytic Capacity Test measures the capacity for maximal sustained exercise over 30–90 seconds. This time range corresponds to the zone where anaerobic glycolysis is the dominant energy source.
Preparation: Avoid high-intensity exercise for 24 hours before the test. Blood lactate meter is prepared and a 10-minute warm-up is performed. The participant mentally prepares for the test: this is an extremely taxing exercise.
Protocol (60-Second Cycling Version): A 60-second version of the Wingate test is applied. Resistance is selected 25% lower than standard Wingate (BW × 0.056). The participant pedals at the highest possible power for 60 seconds. Verbal motivation is continuously provided.
Protocol (Running Version): Maximal 400–800m run. Time and mean speed are recorded.
Data Recording: Power curve is recorded throughout the test. Blood lactate is measured at 1, 3, and 5 minutes post-test. Peak lactate concentration (La_max) is an indicator of glycolytic capacity.
Calculation: Glycolytic capacity = mean power (W/kg) × 60 sec = total work (J/kg). Peak lactate value (mmol/L) is an additional indicator; high La_max (>16 mmol/L) indicates high glycolytic capacity.
Post-Test: 10 minutes of active cool-down. La re-measurement at 10 and 20 minutes. Power decline curve and La peak are analyzed.
Formula
Glikolitik kapasite (J/kg) = ortalama_güç_W/kg × süre_sn; La_maks (mmol/L) ek gösterge
Equipment Required
koşu bandı veya bisiklet ergometre, kan laktat ölçer, kronometre
Normative Values (Age: 18-30 (elit sprinterlər))
| Classification | Male | Female |
|---|---|---|
| Excellent | La_maks >16 mmol/L; ortalama güç >8 W/kg | La_maks >14 mmol/L |
| Good | La_maks 13-16 mmol/L | La_maks 11-14 mmol/L |
| Average | La_maks 10-13 mmol/L | La_maks 8-11 mmol/L |
| Below Average | La_maks 7-10 mmol/L | La_maks 5-8 mmol/L |
| Poor | La_maks <7 mmol/L | La_maks <5 mmol/L |
Practical Applications
The glycolytic capacity test is used for training intensity planning in middle-distance runners (400–800m), swimmers (200m), and combat sports such as wrestling and boxing.
Limitations
Generates very high metabolic stress; cannot be applied in individuals with cardiac risk. Full pre-test rest is essential; fatigue dramatically reduces capacity.
