Ankle sprains are one of the most common sports injuries, and one of the most likely to recur. Much of that recurrence seems linked to rushing back without proper rehab.

    What current guidance broadly supports:

    • Early, protected movement and weight-bearing as pain allows, rather than long periods of rest
    • Balance and proprioception training, started early and continued for weeks, which is linked with fewer repeat sprains
    • Progressive strengthening of the calf and the muscles around the ankle, then hopping, landing and change of direction
    • Taping or a brace during return to sport, which can lower the risk of another sprain in the first months

    Background: proprioception and balance training.

How long did you keep doing ankle exercises after your last sprain?

A simple balance progression: single-leg stance on firm ground for 30 seconds, then eyes closed, then on a cushion, then while catching a ball or doing small hops. Move on when you can do each stage steadily, a few times a week.

Most people stop as soon as walking feels normal, which is exactly when the useful work starts.
