Protocol

The Rockport 1-Mile Walk Test, developed by Kline et al. in 1987, is a submaximal field test for estimating aerobic capacity with minimal equipment. The absence of running makes it ideal for older individuals and sedentary populations.

Preparation: The 1.609 km course must be measured and marked in advance (can be 4 laps of a 400m track or a measured flat path). The participant should have avoided strenuous exercise for 24 hours. Body weight is recorded in kilograms. A heart rate monitor is fitted.

Test Procedure: The participant walks 1 mile (1.609 km) at the fastest possible sustainable pace; running is not permitted. A 3-minute light walk warm-up is performed before the test. The participant should choose a brisk but sustainable walking speed; breathing should not be labored throughout.

Data Recording: Total walking time is recorded in minutes. Heart rate (HR_final) is measured immediately upon completion. Age, sex, and body weight are also recorded.

Calculation: VO₂max (ml/kg/min) = 132.853 − (0.0769 × weight_pounds) − (0.3877 × age) + (6.315 × sex; male=1, female=0) − (3.2649 × time_minutes) − (0.1565 × HR_final). Weight must be in pounds (kg × 2.2046).

Post-Test: The participant cools down with a 5-minute slow walk. Results are compared to age- and sex-based normative tables.

Formula

VO₂max = 132.853 - (0.0769×weight_lbs) - (0.3877×age) + (6.315×sex) - (3.2649×time_min) - (0.1565×HR_final)

Equipment Required

1.609 km (1 mil) ölçülmüş parkur, kronometre, kalp atım hızı monitörü, terazi (kg)

Normative Values (Age: 50-59)

Classification Male Female
Excellent >31 ml/kg/dak >27 ml/kg/dak
Good 26-31 ml/kg/dak 22-27 ml/kg/dak
Average 20-26 ml/kg/dak 16-22 ml/kg/dak
Below Average 14-20 ml/kg/dak 10-16 ml/kg/dak
Poor <14 ml/kg/dak <10 ml/kg/dak

Practical Applications

The Rockport test is used to determine aerobic capacity for older and sedentary individuals, chronic disease management, public health research, and individual exercise prescription.

Limitations

Walking pace warnings may cause some participants to excessively limit their speed. Ceiling effects may occur in highly fit individuals. Pulse measurement accuracy is critical.
