Watch a club player and a touring pro hit forehands in isolation and the gap looks smaller than it should be. The pro’s ball is heavier, faster, more accurate — but not so much heavier and faster that it explains a 1500-point ranking gap. Now watch them play a real point. The pro doesn’t hit a better forehand than the club player. The pro hits a different shot. They saw something earlier, they decided faster, and they were already where they needed to be when the ball arrived. Tennis is rarely lost on the swing. It’s lost in the seconds before the swing, in a three-stage cycle that the coaching literature calls perception–decision–execution.

The cycle, broken down
Perception is the gathering of information from the opponent and the situation. It begins before the opponent contacts the ball — at the toss for a serve, at the takeback for a groundstroke, sometimes even at the recovery step before that. The brain is not waiting for the ball to leave the racquet. It is building a probability map based on the opponent’s posture, racquet face, shoulder rotation, and the patterns this opponent has already shown in this match.
Decision is the selection of a response. Not just “I’m hitting a forehand” but where, with what shape, with what intent, and what the recovery looks like after. In a 5–7 second hard-court point, this decision has to be made and updated continuously, sometimes three or four times before the ball arrives.
Execution is the swing itself — the closed-skill part of an otherwise open-skill sport. This is the part club players spend 95% of their practice time on, and the part where the difference between levels is smallest. A club player’s forehand swing, isolated from context, is not catastrophically different from a regional player’s. The catastrophe is in the two stages before it.
Where points are actually won and lost
The research that quantifies this most cleanly comes from expertise studies in racquet sports (Williams & Ford, 2008; Abernethy, 2001). Elite players don’t have faster eyes or quicker hands than intermediate players. The reaction time on a simple stimulus is roughly the same. What elite players have is earlier and better-targeted attention. They look at the opponent’s hip and shoulder rotation, not the ball. They’ve learned which cues predict direction and which don’t.
The practical consequence is enormous. If an intermediate player needs to see the ball leave the racquet before starting to move, and an elite player has read direction from shoulder rotation 150 ms earlier, the elite player gets a head start that no amount of foot speed can recover. A 200 km/h serve travels half a court in roughly 400 ms. A 150 ms perceptual head start is 38% of the entire flight time.
This is also why “watch the ball” is incomplete advice. You watch the ball to time contact. You don’t watch the ball to read what’s coming. You read what’s coming by watching the opponent’s body.
What “decision” actually means under time pressure
A point is not a single decision. It’s a chain of decisions, each conditional on what just happened and what the opponent did with that information. A typical 8-shot rally on hard court might contain six explicit decision points and a dozen smaller adjustments. The player who decides faster, more accurately, and more consistently wins more points. Not the player who hits harder.
Cognitive load is real here. Each decision has a cost, and a player who has to consciously plan every shot is going to run out of attention. This is why coaching ahead of pattern recognition matters: a player who has seen a thousand cross-court rallies on the deuce side has internalized the typical responses and no longer needs to decide. They react. That reaction is faster and more accurate than any deliberate plan.
The implication for training: drills that force decisions are more valuable than drills that don’t. Live-ball patterns beat baskets of fed balls past a certain point in development. A drill where the player always knows where the next ball is going trains execution and almost nothing else.
Anticipation: the trainable skill nobody trains
Anticipation is the operational form of perception under time pressure. It is the prediction of where the ball will go based on cues that arrive before contact. It is trainable, and the literature on training methods is decent (Williams et al., 2002; Farrow & Reid, 2003).
The methods that work are video occlusion, where you show clips of an opponent’s serve and stop the video at progressively earlier points to force the watcher to predict direction. They work because they replicate the actual perceptual task — read cues, predict outcome — and they give immediate feedback. Most amateur coaches never do this. They could, with a phone and a tripod.
On-court methods that approximate the same skill: shadow patterns where the coach calls “forehand” or “backhand” only after the ball is in flight, forcing the player to wait and read. Returning serves where the server tries to disguise direction. Live patterns where the third shot is sometimes hit normally and sometimes redirected, so the receiver can’t pre-commit.
Execution is not the answer to everything
I see this every week at the club. A player misses a forehand and goes home to drill forehands. Three weeks later, the forehand drill is clean. They go play a match, the forehand still breaks down — because the problem was never the swing. The problem was that they were eight feet out of position when the ball arrived, swinging from a posture that no amount of clean technique can rescue.
This isn’t a small mistake. It’s the dominant mistake at every level below national. Coaches and players reflexively work on execution because it’s measurable, repeatable, and feels productive. Perception and decision-making feel softer, harder to drill, harder to evaluate. So they don’t get trained, and the gap grows.
How to train the cycle, not just the swing
Live-ball drills. Pattern-based hitting. Constraint-based games. Any drill where the player has to look at the opponent and respond to what the opponent did, rather than what the coach told them was coming, trains the full cycle. The cleanest single drill I run is a cooperative cross-court rally with a constraint: every fifth shot can be redirected down the line by either player. The constraint forces both players to read, decide, and execute under realistic uncertainty. It looks soft. It is not. It produces faster, more attentive players in four weeks.
The other piece is video. Watching your own match from the previous weekend, paused at the moment before contact, asking “what cues did I have?” — that’s training perception. Watching the opponent at the moment before they hit, asking “what should I have predicted?” — same skill. Five minutes a week is more than most amateurs do, and the return is large.
The cycle, the whole point
Tennis is open-skill. The single biggest mistake in amateur tennis education is to treat it as closed-skill. Hitting a thousand forehands against a wall does very little for your perception, your decision-making, or your anticipation. It improves a stroke that the perception–decision system will mostly fail to set up properly when it matters.
The match-toughness gap between a club player and a regional player is mostly cognitive, not muscular. Build the cycle, and the swing already in your bag becomes a much better swing — because it’s getting set up better.
One thing to do on court tomorrow
For one practice session, before every shot you hit, look at your opponent’s shoulder and hip rotation — not the ball — until the racquet is on its way to contact. Then return your eyes to the ball for timing. That single change to where your eyes go before contact will retrain perception faster than any drill catalog.
