The first ball is the serve. The second ball is the return. The third ball is where most rallies are actually decided. Match-analysis data from the professional tours places between 60 and 70% of all completed points within the first four shots — and within those, the third ball is the leverage point. Win the third ball and you’ve won the serve patterns. Lose the third ball and your serve is functionally broken. Most amateur coaches teach the serve and the return as if they end the rally. They don’t. They set up the third shot, and that’s where the work is.

The third shot is the server’s first real groundstroke

If you’re serving, your third shot is the first ball you hit from the baseline. The serve and the third shot are a coupled pattern — serve +1 — and they are designed to work together. A wide serve to the deuce-side pulls the returner off the court. A neutral cross-court return from a stretched returner is now a ball you can attack into the open ad-side court. The serve sets up the geometry. The third shot exploits it.

This pattern is the modern game. Watch any tour highlight reel and the serve-and-third-ball patterns are visible everywhere. Body serves leading to third balls behind the returner. Wide serves leading to inside-out forehands into the open court. T-serves leading to backhand cross-court returns that the server steps into with a forehand. The pattern is structural, not improvised. Players have trained these combinations until they execute by default.

Most amateurs don’t think about the third ball at all. They serve, hope the serve is good, and react to whatever comes back. The result is that on a successful first serve, the amateur has won 55–60% of points. The pro has won 75%. The 15–20% gap is the third ball.

The returner’s third ball

If you’re returning, your third shot is the first ball you hit after the return. This is a different problem. The return goes back to the server, who hits a +1 shot designed to test you. Your third ball is the response to their attempted attack. Your job is to absorb the pace, stay in the point, and either neutralize or, occasionally, redirect into the open court.

Returners face a harder third-ball problem than servers. The server gets to choose where the rally starts. The returner has to react to the server’s choice and respond to a server who is already executing a planned pattern. This is why returning is harder than serving and why the return is the second-most-undertrained skill in tennis. The third ball off the return — call it return+1 — is where most returners lose rallies they could have won.

The pattern catalog: server’s side

Seven patterns cover most of the third-ball geometry from the server’s perspective.

Wide serve, inside-out forehand to the open court. The classic. Deuce side. The server’s most reliable point-winning pattern at every level.

T-serve, forehand to the deep corner. Pull the returner off-balance up the middle, then redirect away from where they’re trying to recover.

Body serve, third ball behind the returner. The body serve handcuffs the returner; the third shot exploits the imbalance.

Wide serve ad-side, inside-out forehand to the open court. The mirror of the deuce-side pattern. For a right-hander, this is a backhand pull, but the ad-side wide serve is so effective that the third shot is often a put-away regardless of which wing.

Slice serve out wide, forehand approach. The slice’s low bounce sets up a short return; the server moves in and approaches.

Kick serve up high, third ball with a heavy topspin redirect. Particularly useful on second serve. The kick forces a defensive return, and the server controls the third ball pace and direction.

Serve down the T, return cross-court, server steps in. The pattern where the returner reads the serve well and the server has to convert with a positional advantage rather than an open court.

The point of the catalog isn’t memorization. It’s training. You practice these patterns until they execute under fatigue, in tight scores, on the second serve when you’re nervous. A practiced pattern at 95% reliability beats a flashy improvisation at 65% reliability over a thousand third balls.

The pattern catalog: returner’s side

Four patterns cover most return+1 situations.

Deep cross-court return, deep cross-court next ball. The default. Don’t try to win the rally on ball three. Stay alive.

Deep cross-court return, redirect down the line if the server’s third ball is short. Conditional aggression based on what the server gives you.

Chip-and-charge return on a weak second serve, volley the next ball. The aggressive return+1. Rare at club level, useful at every level when the second serve is genuinely soft.

Block return, recover deep, absorb the server’s +1, neutralize. The defensive return+1. The most common pattern in returning against a big first serve. The goal is to get to a neutral baseline rally where the server’s advantage is gone.

Returners often try to make the return itself the offensive ball. On a 200 km/h serve, this is almost never the right play. The return is to survive. The third ball is the first opportunity to direct the rally. The fifth ball — if the rally goes that far — is often where the real opportunity arises.

Training the third ball

The drill is straightforward. Server hits a serve to a designated location. Returner hits a return cross-court. Server hits the third ball to a designated location. Stop. Reset. Repeat.

For 20 minutes. Then live points starting from the third ball — coach feeds a serve, returner returns, point plays out from there. The constraint reveals everything: which patterns the server has trained, which patterns they default to under live conditions, where their patterns break under fatigue.

The second drill: pattern hopping. Server is told the pattern they will run before each serve — wide+inside-out, body+behind, T+forehand-corner. They practice each pattern in isolation. The conscious labeling speeds the pattern’s transition from deliberate to automatic.

The third: practice matches where every point ends as soon as either player hits a fourth ball. This sounds artificial but forces both players to commit fully to the first three shots. The score is the score. The artificial early termination focuses the practice where the data says the points actually live.

Why this matters more at the club level than the pro level

Counterintuitively, the third-ball pattern matters more at club level than tour level. The pros have already automated their patterns. They execute serve+1 without thinking. The difference between top-100 and top-10 is in the 5% of points outside the patterns — the long rallies, the unusual situations.

At club level, the patterns aren’t trained. A club player who installs even three serve+1 patterns will see immediate improvement in service hold rate, because their opponent has no patterns either and isn’t ready for an organized attack. The asymmetry between trained and untrained patterns is large at the bottom of the skill distribution.

One thing to do on court tomorrow

Pick one serve+1 pattern — wide serve deuce-side, inside-out forehand to the open court is the highest-value place to start — and practice only that combination for 30 minutes. Serve, third ball, stop. Don’t play out the point. The repetition trains the pattern. In a real match next weekend, run the pattern on every deuce-side serve until the opponent adjusts. They probably won’t.
