Protocol
The 2000m Rowing Ergometer Test is a maximal performance test that matches the competitive distance in rowing and measures both aerobic and anaerobic capacity simultaneously. The Concept2 rowing ergometer is considered the gold standard for this test.
Preparation: Ergometer resistance (damper setting) is adjusted according to the athlete’s preference and body weight; settings of 3–5 are recommended for most athletes. A heart rate monitor is fitted. Seat height and foot strap position are adjusted. The participant warms up for 10–15 minutes with light rowing and mobilization exercises.
Test Procedure: The test is started on the ergometer display set to 2000 meters. The participant must complete 2000 meters in the shortest possible time. Pacing strategy is critical: negative split or even tempo is generally recommended. Target pace is set for each 500-meter segment. A final sprint may be performed in the last 500 meters.
Data Recording: Total time, average 500m split time, average watt output, and heart rate are recorded. The Concept2 ergometer logs all this data automatically.
Calculation: Performance is calculated in watts. Watts = 2.8 / (split_seconds/500)³. This value is normalized per body weight as W/kg. Age-adjusted scoring tables are available in the rowing world.
Post-Test: Low-intensity rowing is performed after the test. Blood lactate level may be measured 3–5 minutes later. Results can be compared using the Concept2 global leaderboard system.
Formula
Watts = 2.8 / (split_sec/500)³; W/kg = Watts / bodyweight_kg
Equipment Required
kürek ergometre (Concept2 veya muadili), kalp atım hızı monitörü
Normative Values (Age: 20-29 (sporcular))
| Classification | Male | Female |
|---|---|---|
| Excellent | 340W) | 210W) |
| Good | 6:30-7:00 (280-340W) | 7:30-8:00 (170-210W) |
| Average | 7:00-7:30 (220-280W) | 8:00-8:30 (135-170W) |
| Below Average | 7:30-8:00 (170-220W) | 8:30-9:00 (105-135W) |
| Poor | >8:00 (<170W) | >9:00 (<105W) |
Practical Applications
This test is used as a specific aerobic capacity measure in rowing, kayaking, and triathlete assessment. It is also recognized as a reference performance benchmark in CrossFit and general fitness programs.
Limitations
Results are dependent on rowing technique; performance in inexperienced participants is affected by technical deficiency. Extremely high metabolic stress is imposed; medical clearance may be required.
