If a tennis player is going to add one quality through off-court strength training, it is rotational power. The forehand, the backhand, the serve, the slice, the overhead — every shot in the game involves rotation through the hips and torso. The kinetic chain that delivers force from the ground to the ball is fundamentally a rotational engine. A player who is strong but rotationally weak will hit a ceiling they cannot break through, no matter how much they refine their technique. A player who is rotationally strong will keep producing pace as long as the legs hold up.

What rotational power actually is

Rotational power is the rate of producing force during a rotational movement. Two parts. Force production — how much torque the muscles around the hip, trunk, and shoulder can generate. Rate — how fast that torque can be applied. A player can be strong in absolute terms and slow in rotational application, in which case their forehand looks heavy but predictable. They can be fast but weak, in which case they snap quickly but the ball doesn’t go anywhere. Useful rotational power is both qualities together.

The literature places rotational power production in tennis primarily at the hip-trunk interface. About 50% of racquet head speed comes from trunk rotation in the kinetic chain, with legs supplying about 25%, the shoulder another 15%, and the forearm/wrist the final 10% (Bahamonde, 2000; Kovacs, 2007). So when you train rotational power, you are training the largest contributor to racquet head speed by a comfortable margin.

Why most amateurs are rotationally weak

Almost no general gym training builds rotational power. Squats, deadlifts, presses, rows — all linear or vertical. The body adapts to the planes it is trained in. A player who follows a generic strength program for two years gains real strength in those planes and gains very little rotational power. The transfer to tennis is small.

I see this every year. A player works out hard, gets stronger on the bar, comes to court expecting a heavier ball — and the ball is roughly the same. They blame technique. The technique was fine. The rotational engine never got trained. The strength they built doesn’t apply to the movement they need.

The fix is not to abandon linear strength. The fix is to add rotational work specifically, and to weight it according to where the player needs the gain.

The five exercises that earn their place

The literature and coaching consensus converge on a small set of rotational exercises. Five of them cover most of the demand.

Medicine ball rotational throw. Standing side-on to a wall or partner, hold a medicine ball at hip level. Rotate the hips, then the torso, then release the ball into the wall or partner. The exercise mirrors the forehand kinetic chain precisely. Three to five sets of five reps per side, with a 3–6 kg ball for adults. The ball comes back fast — this is reactive power, not slow strength.

Cable rotational pull. Standing side-on to a cable column at hip height, grip the handle with both hands, pull across the body using hip rotation as the initiator. Mirrors the backhand more than the forehand. Three sets of eight, controlled tempo, focus on initiating with the hips.

Landmine rotation. A barbell anchored at one end (in a landmine attachment or jammed in a corner). The free end is held with both hands. Rotate the free end side to side with the trunk, keeping the hips engaged. The asymmetric load forces stabilization through the core in a way standing rotations don’t. Three sets of six per side.

Russian twist with weight. Seated, leaning back to 45 degrees, holding a plate or kettlebell. Rotate side to side. Often overprescribed and done badly. The right version: slow, controlled, with the rotation coming from the trunk, not the arms. Three sets of ten per side. Use lighter weight than feels right — the trunk should be loaded, not the shoulders.

Single-leg medicine ball rotational throw. Same as the standard rotational throw, but standing on the leg that would be the front leg in your forehand stance. The exercise integrates single-leg stability with rotation, which mirrors what the leg actually does during a wide forehand. Three sets of four per side. Harder than it sounds.

Programming rotational power

The dose is moderate volume, high quality. Rotational power exercises are reactive — they require the body to be fresh enough to produce maximum velocity. Doing them at the end of a long session or with high fatigue is wasted work; you’re training the body to produce sluggish rotations.

The right placement is early in a session, after a thorough warm-up and any priming work. Before heavy linear lifts, not after them. Two sessions a week is enough for in-season maintenance; three is appropriate in an off-season build phase. Sets across the five exercises shouldn’t exceed about 15 total in a session — quality drops quickly past that, and the residual fatigue interferes with hitting the next day.

Across a year, rotational power is a quality to build heavily in the pre-season and maintain in-season. Detraining is rapid: four to six weeks without it and a noticeable percentage of the gain is lost. Maintenance volume during competitive blocks is one to two sessions a week of two or three exercises, not the full five.

The legs are the other half

Rotational power without leg strength is a roof without walls. The ground reaction force that drives hip rotation comes from the legs. A player who can’t squat their body weight cannot produce the ground force their hips need to rotate fast. So while rotational exercises are the prescription, leg strength is the precondition.

This is why I program rotational power into a strength session that already includes squats, single-leg work, and some posterior chain pulling. The rotational work goes early, the leg work goes after — the leg work has fatigue tolerance the rotational work doesn’t.

The contact-point problem

One subtle point. Rotational power applies at the contact point. If a player swings hard but their contact point is poor — too late, too low, too far from the body — the rotational force misses the ball. Building rotational power in someone with broken contact is wasted strength. Fix the contact point first; then the rotational training transfers.

This shows up in juniors most often. A 14-year-old with technique still in flux who suddenly gets stronger in rotation hits weirdly inconsistent balls — sometimes huge, sometimes shanked. The strength is real, the application is unreliable. Patience and continued technical work resolves it.

Testing rotational power

The simplest field test: standing rotational medicine ball throw for distance. Stand sideways, feet at shoulder width, hold a 3 kg medicine ball. Rotate and throw the ball forward (toward the wall, or for distance outdoors). Three attempts, record the best. Retest every 6–8 weeks. Distance improvements track rotational power improvements with reasonable fidelity.

The norm for an adult competitive male is roughly 8–12 meters with a 3 kg ball; for a competitive female, 6–10 meters. Numbers below these suggest rotational power is a meaningful limiter. Numbers above suggest other qualities are likely the bottleneck.

One thing to do on court tomorrow

Add five medicine ball rotational throws per side to your warm-up, before any hitting. Use a 2–4 kg ball, into the fence or a wall, with intent — focus on initiating with the hips, not the arms. Five per side, every practice for two weeks. You will notice the forehand feel different in the second week. That’s the rotational engine waking up.
